A handful of colleges and universities are opening the fall semester with historic enrollment gains despite a forecasted decline in traditional-aged student prospects. Across several campuses, leaders pointed to affordability as a key driver.
The University of Oklahoma welcomed 6,437 first-year students, extending a six-year streak of enrollment highs. Total enrollment has grown 45% during that period, according to a school announcement.
“At a time when universities across the country are struggling, OU is experiencing remarkable momentum,” Oklahoma University President Joseph Harroz Jr. said in a statement.
Several institutions across Texas are also experiencing eye-popping increases.
Texas Tech University surpassed 45,000 students for the first time, capping five straight years of enrollment growth, including a 12% increase in the last two years. First-year enrollment reached a record 9,552 students and has climbed 39% since 2024.
The University of Houston eclipsed 7,000 first-year students for the first time, marking its third consecutive year of new enrollment highs. New graduate enrollment also rose 6.5%.

Rice University, also in Houston, welcomed its largest incoming class ever at 1,352 students. Undergraduate enrollment has expanded 25% since 2020 and is approaching 5,000 total students.
- The University of Arkansas topped 7,000 first-year students for the first time, 5 News Online reports.
- The University of Arkansas at Little Rock reported a 17% jump in first-year enrollment and a 7% increase in its total undergraduate headcount.
- Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus also posted strong gains, with enrollment rising 12.3% to its highest level since 2019, according to Fort Smith Southwest Times Record.
- The University of Alabama Huntsville posted its first enrollment increase in six years, fueled by growth among both first-year undergraduates (5%) and graduate students (4.8%).
- North Idaho College has nearly returned to its 2019 levels after seven straight semesters of growth, Post Falls Press reports.
What’s driving college enrollment growth?
College officials across multiple institutions cited new affordability measures as a major factor in attracting students.
At the University of Oklahoma, net tuition and fees for resident undergraduates have fallen by 20% over the past seven years. At the same time, need-based aid has increased 39% and scholarship support rose 38%.
“[W]e are proving that excellence and affordability can go hand in hand, keeping the American Dream within reach for more Oklahoma families,” Harroz Jr. said.
University of Arkansas at Little Rock has also positioned affordability as a cornerstone of its enrollment strategy.
“These preliminary results show that more students and families are recognizing both the quality and affordability of a UA Little Rock education,” Chancellor Christina S. Drale said.
Texas’ public institutions are benefiting from statewide efforts to curb costs. Tuition has remained frozen since 2023, while financial aid has increased by $328 million through 2027.
Career alignment has also played a major role for some institutions.
Bowling Green State University in Ohio experienced a 3% enrollment increase this year, driven in part by a 32% surge in pre-professional programs such as dentistry, law and pharmacy. Enrollment in engineering and nursing schools also climbed 30% and 15%, respectively.
Enrollment at Austin Community College is up 6% over last year, topping 44,000 students, thanks to increased enrollment in advanced manufacturing and applied technologies, CBS Austin reports.
